Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Indigenous language newspapers play an essential role in preserving and promoting cultural heritage by documenting and disseminating information in native languages. In Garki Local Government, Jigawa State, these newspapers are critical in reinforcing linguistic identity, passing on cultural values, and fostering a sense of community (Ibrahim & Abubakar, 2024). By publishing content in local languages, they serve as a bridge between tradition and modernity, ensuring that cultural knowledge and practices are not lost to younger generations (Garba & Ahmed, 2023). Research has shown that language preservation is central to sustaining cultural diversity, and indigenous newspapers provide a platform for storytelling, education, and the celebration of traditions (Abdullahi & Musa, 2024). However, challenges such as declining readership, limited resources, and competition from mainstream media threaten their sustainability and effectiveness. This study explores the role of indigenous language newspapers in preserving cultural heritage in Garki Local Government.
